Actual length of the Himalayan mountaineering holidays varied from four (4) to sixty-seven (67) days during the study period spanning from 2010 to 2014. To make this vast range more comprehensible, I have calculated an average duration.
But surprisingly, I did not find any direct relationship between the altitude and expedition duration, state and expedition duration, and mountaineer’s nationality and expedition duration.
Average Duration of All Expeditions
The average duration aggregated 28.14 days during the study period. The average was the highest (30.03 days) in 2010 and the lowest (25.16 days) in 2013. The average curve shows sharp rises and falls.
State Wise Average Duration
Sikkim recorded both the highest average duration (35.33 days in 2012) and the lowest average duration (20 days in 2013). Overall average duration for Sikkim was 31.60 days.
In Uttarakhand, average duration was slightly more than one month in the half decade except in 2013 when it was less than a month (26.46 days). The Indian expeditions (28.65 days) were shorter than the foreign expeditions (32.63 days).
Average duration of expeditions to Himachal Pradesh was 25.94 days, the lowest among all four Himalayan states. The Indian expeditions were almost two days shorter than the foreign expeditions.
In Jammu and Kashmir, 5-year average duration was almost same for both Indian (28.24 days) and foreign (28.33 days) expeditions. The overall average amounted to 28.30 days.
Altitude Wise Average Duration of All Expeditions
Interestingly, there was no definite trend in average duration vis-à-vis peak altitude. However, the shortest expedition (11.50 days) was to peak of 5000-5499 meter category in 2011. The longest expedition (45.80 days) was to a peak of 7500-7999 meter category in 2012.
The average duration for 7500-7999 meter category varied from 28.50 days in 2014 to 45.80 days in 2012.
The longest expedition to the peak of 5000-5499 meter category was of 31 days in 2014.
Altitude Wise Average Duration of Indian Expeditions
The shortest Indian expedition was of 17.80 days to a peak of 5500-5999 meter category in 2012. The longest expedition (43.33 days) was to a peak of 7500-7999 meter category in 2011.
Altitude Wise Average Duration of Foreign Expeditions
The shortest foreign expedition was of 11.50 days (5000-5499 meter category) and the longest was of 49.50 days (7500-7999 meter category).
