Walk the Dzuko Trail with MMTA this Summer
Surrounded by high mountains, the Dzuko Valley in Senapati District (Manipur,India) runs along Nagaland border. During January and February, the river freezes, icicles form, everything becomes white as snow embraces it. Summer and spring are the seasons to picture deep pink Dzuko lilies that look like Siroi lily but are endemic to the valley. The Dzuko is a riot of color in monsoon. Carry enough film roles to photograph wild flowers and orchids.
Manipur Mountaineering and Trekking Association (MMTA) is organizing a trek to the valley and Mount Iso from June 15, 2011. A 6-day trek costs INR 3,500.00 per person. Book byJune 10, 2011. Mount Iso (2995 meters), located behind the valley, is the highest peak in Manipur.
If you cannot join this program, try Dzuko Valley and Japfu Peak Trek organized by Shikhar Travels. This 9-day adventure of strenuous grade costs USD 1,361.00 per person on twin sharing basis and USD 1,523.00 per person on single occupancy basis. The cost includes all meals, camping equipment, camping fee and services of camping staff during 4-day trek period. The Japfu peak (3014 meters) is the second highest peak in Nagaland.
Gopal Restaurant at Asvem Beach, Goa: A Complete Rip-off
Stuffed parathas (Indian bread) are the most favorite breakfast item inIndia, especially in northIndia. Parathas are served with curds, butter, rajma or channa and pickle- a standard complimentary accompaniment. So far, I have never paid for pickle except at Gopal Restaurant onAsvemBeach(Goa,India) in April 2007. It charged INR 10.00 for 3-4 small pieces of mixed pickle, a complete rip-off. I flipped when I saw pickle in the bill, restaurant owner who presented bill snapped, “We charge for it as it is expensive.”
Even high-end hotels do not charge for it. Gopal, covered with a thatched roof, is a functional eatery, serving average food on worn-out plastic tables arranged on loose sand. Service is extremely slow. The most disappointing part of it was we were not informed at the time of placing the order.

It was a shock to read, “Delhiis the safest city” because I still have many memories of badly behaved crowd (e.g. eve teasing in DTC buses.) during my stay spanning more than two decades in the city.
Lala Maatu Ram Halwai’s banner reading “INR 40/- per piece of jalebi” in the Surajkund Crafts Mela (Feb1-15, 2010),Haryana,India may surprise you as it did me and many other visitors. Generally, a thin crisp sweet jalebi is about2 inches in diameter. However, Maatu’s each jalebi measured approximately6 inches in diameter and weighed about250 grams. It was thick, crisp and filled with hot sugar syrup. Yummy stomach-filling Maatu’s jalebi was worth the price quoted on the banner. If you are visiting the mela, buy one jalebi at least. Lala Maatu Ram Halwai, a popular sweet shop, is located in Gohana, Sonipat,Haryana,India.
We (my sister and I) stayed in Room No: 243 for a day at Raj Hans Hotel in Surajkund,Haryana,India onFeb 6, 2010, as it is located close to the Surajkund Crafts Mela ground. Though this massive property claims to have five star facilities, it was a disappointment. Since there was…
Travel by New Snazzy Thiruvananthapuram Rajdhani
I’m happy to know about Go Kerala campaign, focusing on domestic tourists. As a part of the campaign, Go Kerala Rajdhani Express Train painted in brilliant vinyl graphics was inaugurated on January 17, 2010. It is good to hear that interiors of the train will also be kept equally beautiful throughout the journey. But marketing executives promoting different types of products are not welcomed in the train.

However, Sunbird, the mid-end and budget resort, is already booked for government dignitaries. Rajhans offers five star facilities, so it is quite expensive. Rajhans tariff ranges from INR 2500.00 per day plus taxes to INR 14,000.00 per day, whereas Sunbird
Travelers, Tourists Should Not Ignore Local Norms, Especially in Today’s World Where Terrorism is Very Common
Andy Pag’s green travel expedition in biofuel-driven bus came to a halt when he was taken to jail from Pushkar- a pilgrim center inRajasthan,India. He was having a satellite phone, carrying which is illegal in the country. The cops were alert in view of David Coleman Headley’s involvement in attacks on major Mumbai hotels in 2008. David, in fact, stayed in Pushkar for months together before the attacks.
Rediscover Legends of Historic Jallianwalla Bagh on the Weekend
Travel during holidays is generally recreational in nature, but it has three other important roles to play: learning, promoting peaceful co-existence of different communities and respecting cultures at home and destinations. Especially in today’s world where terrorism and separatism are becoming big threats to common man, visiting monuments erected to commemorate brave selfless people who sacrificed their lives for independence of India, and analyzing and following their philosophies are need of the hour. There could be no better day other than August 15, the Independence Day, for paying homage to them. Continue reading
