Don’t Walk Like a Coolie, Carry only the Essentials
In all my big and small adventure expeditions to remote areas, organizers ensured that participants should carry only the essentials contrary to desire of participants, especially teenagers and rookies who pack a dress a day, a sweater a day, make up and shaving kits and other fancy items to look their best in no man’s land. Organizers advise do not walk like a coolie (porter), travel light, enjoy beautiful surroundings and reach the destination in time, happy and relaxed.
There is nothing wrong in looking good. However, beyond snowline, in deep recesses of forests, deserts or other similar environs where public conveniences are non-existent bathing and cleaning are itself an adventure. Then, what is the use of make-up kits? In fact, growing beard in extreme climates protect the skin from harmful effects of ultraviolet rays. Traveling light saves energy and keeps fatigue related problems at bay. Some travelers may argue that mules and porters can be hired but both require money and at many places, these luxuries may not be available.
