I have been frequently asked about Sikkim-based government institutes offering mountaineering and other adventure activity courses. I have earlier talked about the Sonam Gyatso Mountaineering Institute (S.G.M.I.) located in Gangtok. However, this institute does not cater to individual requests.
But do not worry!
The state tourism department built Indian Himalayan Centre for Adventure & Ecotourism (IHCAE) in Chemchey, South Sikkim with central financial support (INR 38,954,000). This recently set up institute conducts courses for individuals.
The center offers courses in 8 adventure activities:
- Mountain Biking
- Rescue Operations
- River Rafting
- Rock Climbing
The fee depends on the course selected. For example, the institute charges INR 8,000 per Indian student for a 30-day advance mountaineering course. The fee for a foreign student amounts to INR 30,000.
The skiing training season will begin from January 25, 2015.
