The Religious Fabric of Chandigarh
In Chandigarh, the Indian city of cookie-cutter box houses, remembering god is a routine for many, especially middle-aged and old people. They visit gurudwaras, temples, churches and mosques depending on the religion they practice. God-fearing or strong-believers, whatever you may call them, they believe that shrines offer the most suitable ambience for communicating with and complaining to Him and seeking His blessings.
Individuals and / or groups of people organize different types of religious events- akhand path, jagrata, kirtan and satsang regularly at both community and family levels. Singing the praises of almighty and reading sacred books are highlights of all formalized religious events. For instance, during Jagrata, devotees remain awake for one or more nights and sing devotional songs and chant god’s name and hymns to thank for His blessings. Generally, young boys and men visit door-to-door to raise funds for the community level events.
