We spotted a few public conveniences in Leh town during September-October 2013. Two pay-per-use public toilets are in the heart of the town: One is in Polo Ground, near District Commissioner’s Office and the other is near District Library and Tibetan Ready Made Market situated within easy walking distance of Balkhang Chowk. The fee starts from INR 5 per person, per use.
Although Polo Ground has a public convenience, several men relieve themselves in open. Thus, the parts of the ground stink. A free men’s urinal near Moravian Church on Zangasti Road also stinks.
Public conveniences are also built (1) near or within the major monument complexes, (2) at the airport, and (3) in the restaurants within the hotels. But remember that toilets within restaurant complex may not be available for passersby. Sometimes a polite request may be met.
Public toilets feature gender specific sections. You can expect water in the toilets but should not expect toilet papers and soap.
