Royalty for peaks in Sikkim
The State Government of Sikkim levies substantial peak royalty for climbing within the Sikkim Himalaya. As of 2010, the royalty for foreign expeditions amounts to
US$ 8,000 for peaks above 8,000 meters
US$ 7,000 for 7,501-8,000-meter peaks
US$ 6,000 for 7,001-7,500-meter peaks
US$ 5,500 for 6,501-7,000-meter peaks
US$ 5,000 for peaks below 6,500 meters
The Indian expeditions pay 50% of the royalty charged to foreign expeditions. If you book expeditions via Himalayan Mountaineering Institute (HMI), Darjeeling, Sonam Gyatso Mountaineering Institute, Gangtok or a travel agent based in Sikkim, you can save 20% on the royalty.
