Ski Shitidhar

October 26, 2012

Where to travel

Shitidhar (Friendship) Peak (5,289 meters) in the Pir Panjal Range is located in Kullu District of Himachal Pradesh, India.

What to do & see

The peak is the highest point of Shiti-dhar. The word “Dhar” means “ridge” in local language. Since the ridge is visible from Manali, the peak appears in many Bollywood movies shot in the town.

You can start at Solang (2,350 meters). Solang to Dhundhi Thatch (2,540 meters) is about five kilometers trek. Near Dhundhi, the Seri and Solang streams meet. Walk for two more kilometers to reach the base of the peak. Camp here. Another short trek ends at the summit of the peak that lends itself to sweeping views of the Himalaya. You can spot Beas Kund, Hanuman Tibba (5,930 meters), Mukar Beh (6,070 meters), Shikhar Beh (6,200 meters) and Taintu La (5,000 meters).

The ski area’s altitude varies from 2,350 to 4,355 meters. To ski its south face, you will need 2 to 3 days. Start trekking early morning before sunrise, so that you can ski down before afternoon to avoid slush and avalanches. See pictures of the Friendship Peak and its environs

When to go
