Hotel Maurya (Kangra, Himachal Pradesh, India) offers three types of rooms: Standard, Deluxe and Super Deluxe. The website reads” The hotel offers rooms with wall to wall carpet …”

We booked Super Deluxe room online for five days and paid full tariff in advance. We checked in on September 22, 2012. It was a disappointment. We did not find any wall-to-wall carpet in the Super Deluxe room, which is the best room of the hotel.  According to Cambridge Dictionary, wall-to-wall carpet means “carpet which is cut to cover the whole floor in a room.” However, the room pictures clearly show two small thin “carpets” that cover the floor partly.

It is a Paharganj (Delhi)-style hotel. The room is so small that there is hardly any space on the one side of the bed.

The television is installed on the wall near ceiling, so watching television is a strenuous exercise. The room with AC looked clean but it is small. It is nothing more than a standard economy room. So the Super Deluxe Room in Hotel Maurya is a misnomer and not recommended. We wasted INR 8,000/- paid in advance, as we did not stay there even for one day.

When we checked in the bed-side lamps were not working and the tube light was also flickering. These were repaired afterwards.

Only one more room was occupied. We had a brief conversation with the staff. During which we found out that the rooms were generally occupied in the night (“kamre raat ko lgtae hai) only. We asked them what type of people stay there. The staff kept quiet.

The centrally located hotel on a busy road has easy access but it has no noise proofing. So noise is another big issue.

Did Trip Advisor and Lonely Planet check the hotel before recommending it?

Ironically, it is also approved by the Himachal Pradesh (H.P.) Govt. Tourism Department. These approvals and recommendations are misleading.

We checked out after 2-3 hours.

Our Verdict: We do not recommend Hotel Maurya because of the following reasons:

  1. Noise
  2. The Super Deluxe Room is in fact another standard economy room.
  3. False information on the website about facilities, like “wall-to-wall carpet”
  4. If you book online, you have to make full payment in advance. If you do not like the room, there is no refund. An advance notice is required for cancellation and refund.
