This is the second post in 10-blog-post series focusing on helpful resources used for planning the Kangra trip starting from Chandigarh and problems we faced during the process. The series was started on Monday August 27, 2012.
Staff at Himachal Pradesh Enquiry Counter at Inter State Bus Terminal (ISBT) in Sector 43, Chandigarh told us that Baijnath bound bus would go to Pragpur. But all Baijnath buses might not go via Pragpur. Therefore, you check with the bus conductor. The conductor babbled yes. But we wanted some more information: How many hours does it take to reach Pragpur… He told us that he did not know, and we should board the bus to find out.
Pragpur is about 180 kilometers from Chandigarh. Although around 6:15 AM, a bus goes to Baijnath, there is no direct bus from Chandigarh to Pragpur.
Another hitch was that there was no advance booking option for the buses plying in the morning, but we wanted to go early morning. So we reached 45 minutes early at the bus stand on August 28, 2012 to get a seat of our choice.
We boarded Chandigarh Transport Undertaking (CTU) bus destined for Baijnath at around 6:15 AM. We checked with the driver before boarding the bus. The driver said that it would stop at Pragpur. However, the conductor did not know about Pragpur and he issued ticket up to Bharwain. We asked the conductor twice. But he did not know anything about Pragpur. When we were approaching Bharwain, he came to us and issued another ticket for Nehran Pukhar, about 12 km after Bharwain, and advised us to get down there and take another bus.
If you wish to travel to Pragpur and Garli by public bus, take Baijnath-bound bus but check with the driver and conductor for Nehran Pukhar. Buy ticket for Nehran Pukhar. You can catch a direct bus for Pragpur and Garli from Nehran Pukhar. It takes about 20-30 minutes to reach the villages.
Alternatively, you can go by taxi.
