Trek to Dashair Lake


Dashair Lake (4, 408 meters), near Rohtang Pass (3,978 meters) in Kullu District, Himachal Pradesh, remains covered by ice for almost whole year. Several different names are used for the lake, including Akbar Lake, Dashaur Lake, Dashair Lake, Dashir Lake, Sarkund and Shela Sar. The curative waters of the lake draw scores of Hindu pilgrims, especially from Himachal Pradesh, in August / September every year.

The lake, hemmed with several cliffs and snow-covered slopes, can be used as the base camp to explore nearby region. About 3-meter deep glacial lake, located above Marhi and in the west of the Beas Rikhi Peak and Rohtang Pass, occupies a slim saddle on thePirPanjalRange’s crest line. The mountains of Lahaul look closer from the lake.

A one-day trek (about six kilometers) to the lake can be started from Marhi (3,220 meters),RohtangPassor Shagra Dugh. Marhi, located en route Rohtang Pass, has paragliding facilities and temporary basic eateries.RohtangPassis about 2 ½ hours drive from Manali if there is no traffic jam. You can walk this intermediate-level trail from July to October. It is better to hire a guide who knows the route well, especially when time is a constraint.
