Where to buy maps for climbing, trekking expeditions to Indian Himalayas

Accurate maps are one of the essentials playing a decisive role in the success of a climbing and / or trekking expedition to the Indian Himalayas. But where to buy the maps? That’s very important.

Survey of India (SOI) and National Atlas and Thematic Mapping Organization (NATMO), a part of the Indian Department of Science & Technology, offer authentic maps for various purposes such as district planning, trekking and defense operations. There are also many private book companies that publish maps, but it is difficult to find out the reliable one.

For instance, SOI and NATMO show Hanuman Tibba, a popular trekking peak inHimachal Pradesh,India, on the boundary of Kangra and Kullu districts in Trekking Map Series-Kullu Valley(1990) and District Planning Map Series-Kullu (1996) respectively. Him (Alaya) achal Tourist Guide Map, designed by Vidya Chitra Prakashan, also marked the peak on the boundary. However, Him (Alaya) achal Tourist Road Atlas and Map drawn, designed and printed by Indian Map Service,Jodhpur, and Him (Alaya) achal Map published by Eicher Goodearth Limited in 2006 show the peak in Kangra district.
