Skiing in the vicinity of Srinagar

Where to travel

Despite heavy snowfall and the virgin slopes of the Pir Panjal Range, Yusmarg, the Meadow of Jesus, does not receive many skiers. Professional skiers can hang out in the meadow during winter leaving behind their mobiles and iPads. If you are not a skier, don’t worry. You can simply play in fresh snow.

In the second half of 2012, Yusmarg Development Authority (YDA) proposed infrastructure improvement projects, including up gradation of the Yusmarg Road and building budget accommodation. The Tourism Department mooted an idea for preparing the tourism development plan and developing camping sites, trekking facilities, budget accommodations, a signage system, mountain bike trail, solid waste management system and ropeway connecting Neelnag-Yusmarg-Bargarh. Work on some of these tourism projects have begun.

Who will enjoy this short adventure trip idea?

Professional skiers may try cross-country skiing and ski run from Gulmarg to Yusmarg.

Non-skiers, especially who are looking for snow, can enjoy snowfall.

What to do & see: physical, cultural

Yusmarg (approximately 2,377 meters / 7.850 feet) on the Dudh Ganga, a tributary of the Jhelum River, is located in Badgam District, Jammu and Kashmir (J&K). Hemmed with fir and pine trees, the meadow in southwest of Srinagar, the state capital, has a special place in history and traditional medicine. The home to Yadu / Yahudas on the ancient trade route between the Far East and the Middle East was visited by Jesus. Charari-Sharief, the Shrine of Alamdar-e-Kashmir, falls between Srinagar and Yousmarg. The climate is congenial for the growth of various medicinal plants, including Datura stramonium, Aconitum heterophyllum and Artemisia spp.

A ten-kilometer trail to the lake in the Sang-e-Safed Valley, and a four-kilometer hike to Nilnag / Neelnag Lake start from the meadow. The former lake remains frozen almost for the whole year.

The meadow lends itself to the views of the Romesh Thong (5,000 meters), Tatakoti / Tattakutti (4,725 meters), Sunset (4,746 meters) and other peaks of the Pir Panjal Range. From Tatakoti, the Dudh Ganga originates. The expeditions to these peaks start from the meadow.
