This week I found two interesting jobs for seasoned trekkers. The salaries are quite reasonable. India Hikes (IH) and Youth Hostel Association of India (YHAI), two popular trek organizers, are looking for new people.
Bengaluru-based IH is looking for content managers, according to the heading of the advertisement published on Naukri.com. But if you read the entire advertisement carefully, you will be forced to believe that IH is seeking travel writers or content writers who can write about treks. They should have exceptional creative writing skills, visual content creation skills, social media skills, and trekking experience. The aspirants may have graduate degree in any subject, but candidates with journalism background may get preference. The advertisement does not specify that the writing will be based on first-hand experience or from secondary resources.
YHAI, headquartered in Delhi, is looking for a general manager who will play multiple roles: planner, developer, reviewer, human resource manager, promoter, representor, fund raiser… The advertisement does not specify the salary. The salary column in the Naukri.com advertisement reads “as per the industry norms.” YHAI organizes treks and other adventures for budget travelers, but it still earns profits. The candidates should have a bouquet of business skills to run the show. The institute is looking for MBAs with at least five years’ experience.
Neither IH nor YHAI seek candidates with professional qualifications in adventure tourism although both work in this segment. This is a sorry state of affairs.
