Load limit for porters accompanying adventure expeditions

As per the guidelines of the Indian Mountaineering Foundation (IMF), a porter shall not carry more than twenty-five (25) kilograms of load per day for a distance of up to ten (10) kilometers. However, distance covered may vary with the altitude and difficulty level of the route. The load limit decreases with an increase in altitude as given below:

12-kilogram load per porter at altitude  above 7,000 meters

15-kilogram load per porter at altitude ranging from 7,000 to 6,001 meters

20-kilogram load per porter at altitude ranging from 6,000 to 5,001 meters

25-kilogram load per porter at altitude up to 5,000 meters

Thus, climbers shall carefully estimate total number of porters required for an expedition to the Indian Himalaya.
