Should Priority be Given to Introducing More Tourism Courses or Creating Well-Paid Tourism Jobs for Existing BTA, MTA Degree Holders?

Should Priority be Given to Introducing More Tourism Courses or Creating Well-Paid Tourism Jobs for Existing BTA, MTA Degree Holders?

I don’t think more tourism and travel courses are required. Need of the hour is to improve education standards and create well-paid jobs for Masters in Tourism Administration (MTA) and Bachelors of Tourism Administration (BTA)-degree holders. Today there are a number of institutions offering these courses. Unfortunately, these degrees do not get you well-paid and suitable jobs.

Almost each Indian state has a tourism development corporation and a tourism department but how many of them advertise officer level jobs for qualified tourism professionals. Most of the states even have a website, but do they hire travel writers? Besides tourism officers and travel writers, the tourism and travel industry also needs market analysts and market intelligence officers to plan growth strategies. But how many such jobs are created and advertised? If once in while such vacancies are advertised, MBA-degree-obsessed employers overlook MTA and BTA degree holders.

In fact, while emphasizing on professional tourism and travel education the industry should offer suitable job avenues. We could have an All India Tourism Service competitive examination to appoint officers of tourism departments, tourism development corporations and other related organizations like UPSC conducts special competitive exams for MBBS-, Geology- and Statistics-degree holders.
