Two Things to Do in Shey

Shey village at an altitude of about 3,415 meters (11,270 feet) is approximately fifteen (15) kilometers from Leh. Shey, situated to the south east of Leh, is on the right bank of the Indus River and on the Leh-Thiksey Monastery Road. Travelers looking for activity-based holidays can spot birds and fish in the village.

Bird Watching in Shey Marshes 

Shey Marshes, a small marshy tract along the Indus River in Shey village, is divided into two parts by a link road. The Shey fish farm is located in the southwest of the marshes, a natural wetland. Birders have spotted various types of birds in the wetland during May-June and September-November. For instance, barn swallow, black redstart, black-winger stilt, common moorhen, common greenshank, green sandpiper,  ibis bill, long-tailed shrike, rosy pipits, snipe, Spanish sparrow, water pipit, white wagtail…

Shey Fish Farm

The small Shey Fish Farm (3,262 meters / 10,765 feet) covers an area of one hectare. Out of which 50% is covered by water. The farm, comprising five ponds, serves as an acclimatization zone for the fish brought from the Kashmir Valley before transporting the fish to various parts of the Ladakh Region.

Holy Fish Pond overlooks the Shey Palace and is located at the end of Thiksey-Shey link road.

Shey Trout Farm

Shey Trout Farm (3,247 meters / 10,715 feet), located near Sindhu Ghat, is divided into several ponds featuring rainbow trout.
