Hire a taxi from Kathmandu (Nepal) for Sundarijal (about15 kilometers), an entry point to the Shivapuri-NagarjunNational Parkdrained by theNagmatiRiver. The entry ticket to the park costs NPR 10.00 per person for Nepali nationals and NPR 250.00 per person for others.
About 5-hour walk to Chisapani (2,300 meters) starts from Sundarijal, a popular picnic spot commanding views of a waterfall. You have to negotiate stone steps until Mulkharka- a Tamang Settlement in the park. From Mulkharka village, you can photograph theKathmanduValley. Thereafter, the trail winds through the lush forest intermittent by charming kharkas, the traditional grazing areas. From Chisapani ridge, you can enjoy the Eastern Himalayan mountainscape comprising Everest, Dorje Ihakpa, Langtang, Gaurishankar ranges. The trail will end at the other gate of the park in Chisapani. You can sleep in a lodge at Chispani.
Next day’s trail requires about six hours to reach Sankhu. Amble through Sankhu before taking a taxi for Kathmandu(about 20 kilometers). Do not miss Vajrayogini temple of 17th century, dedicated to the Vajrajogini- the tantric goddess, and a settlement of the Lichchhavi period spanning from 2nd to 9th century AD. Both are inscribed on the tentative list of UNESCO World Heritage Sites. Tiered temples, public squares, rest houses and slim streets of this Newari settlement on ancient trade route toTibet are rich cultural repositories.
